Gaza farmers, fishermen protest against Israel

Xinhua, May 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Dozens of Palestinian fishermen and farmers demonstrated on Tuesday in Gaza city against what they see as "endless targeting" by the Israeli military.

The demonstrators called for international protection, condemning the Israeli military's practice of targetting them while they fish at sea or work the fields close to borders between Gaza and Israel.

At the end of a 50-day large-scale military air and ground operation Israel waged on the Gaza Strip last summer, an Egyptian-brokered truce was reached between Israel and Hamas movement, which rules Gaza.

According to the truce agreement, Israel expanded the area allowed for fishing by Gaza fishermen from three miles to six miles and minimized the no-go zone near the border area from 300 meters to 100 meters.

However, since the end of the Israeli war on Gaza on Aug 26, the Israeli army has been targeting Gaza fishermen and farmers, injuring or arresting dozens of them. Endit
