1st LD Writethru: U.S. dollar rises against euro amid Greece concerns

Xinhua, May 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

The U.S. dollar climbed against the euro on Monday on rising concerns over Greece's debt issues.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday that Greece was "in the final stretch" to achieve a deal on the resolution of the Greek debt crisis with its international lenders in the following days.

However, a recent leaked memo from International Monetary Fund showed that there's little chance for Greece to make a scheduled June 5 payment.

The shared currency dropped 1.23 percent against the U.S. dollar during the session. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six other currencies, was up 1.20 percent at 94. 249 in late trading.

On the economic front, U.S. builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes in May dropped 2 points to a level of 54, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index released Monday.

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.1303 dollars from 1.1461 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound declined to 1.5658 dollars from 1.5752 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar went down to 0.7980 dollar from 0. 8047 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 120.01 Japanese yen, higher than 119.29 yen of the previous session. The greenback climbed to 0.9258 Swiss franc from 0.9144 Swiss franc, and increased to 1.2164 Canadian dollars from 1.2009 Canadian dollars. Endite
