Former Kazakh PM put under extended house arrest for investigation

Former Kazakh Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov, charged with serious crimes of corruption, will remain under house arrest for one more month till June 18 to facilitate criminal investigation into his case, a district court announced Friday.

Akhmetov worked as governor of the Karaganda Region, first deputy prime minister and then prime minister of the Central Asian country. From April to October 2014 he was the defense minister.

According to the Agency for Civil Service Affairs and Anti-Corruption of Kazakhstan, a number of serious criminal cases against former leaders of the Karaganda Region and the Karaganda city and other persons are being investigated.

Akhmetov has been accused of misappropriating and embezzling budget funds on a large scale and placed under house arrest for repeated periods. Endi
