Nearly 33 pct of foreign tourists return to Vietnam: survey

Around 32.98 percent of international tourists travel Vietnam for second time and more, said Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) here on Friday.

The information was released at a press conference on result of a survey on international tourists to Vietnam in 2014 held in Vietnam's capital Hanoi on Friday.

The survey, carried out by the VNAT during October-November 2014, targeted on foreigners and Vietnamese overseas.

With 13,980 questionnaires in six different languages, the survey asked tourists randomly after they finished journeys at Vietnam's seven international border gates, including three airports, two border gates and two seaports.

Among the surveyed tourists, 67.02 percent of them were first- time travelers, while 18.1 percent of them came to Vietnam for the second time. Other 5.77 percent and 9.11 percent of them traveled to the country for the third and fourth time, respectively.

The survey also showed that on average, a tourist spent around 125.74 U.S. dollars on shopping and 1,114.4 U.S. dollars for accommodation in Vietnam.

Regarding accommodation, visitors from Oceania paid the highest amount with 1,167 U.S. dollars per person-time due to their long- stay journeys.

Meanwhile, tourists from Asia, who usually stayed for a short time, spent 861 U.S. dollars per person-time at accommodation facilities for the whole holiday.

However, for daily expenditure, Asian visitors had the highest spending with 126.4 U.S. dollars per day while those from Europe spent the least with 97.8 U.S. dollars per day, said the survey.

With the survey result, Vietnamese tourism sector maintains to target Asia as its key and prioritized market, Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA quoted the VNAT as saying on Friday.

Foreign arrivals to Vietnam in the first four months of 2015 reached some 2.7 million person-times, down 12.2 percent year-on- year, according to Vietnam's General Statistics Office.

The country set a goal to welcome some 8.5 million person-times of foreign tourists in 2015. Endi
