1st LD: At least 15 stranded as pro-coup forces attack Burundi state radio, TV

Xinhua, May 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 15 workers including journalists and other agents Thursday got stranded inside Burundi National Radio and Television (RTNB) in an attack by pro-coup forces, a witness told Xinhua.

The fighting started at about 12:45 p.m. local time and is still going on. And the state radio went off the air later during the fight.

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza earlier on Thursday made his first public announcement after the attempted coup through the state radio, commending security and defense forces who did not join other coup plotters.

"I thank security and defense forces who didn't join coup plotters," said Nkurunziza.

Nkurunziza called on soldiers who are still behind the coup plotters to "surrender". Endi
