Crowds cheer Prince Harry on New Zealand tour

The fifth in line to the British throne spent time with New Zealand's war veterans Thursday as his week-long tour of the country neared its end.

Prince Harry was greeted by a crowd of about 1,000 people at the War Memorial Centre in the lower North Island city of Whanganui, Radio New Zealand reported.

The prince chatted to veterans at the center and looked through the Book of Remembrance.

Earlier, he received a traditional Maori welcome at a local marae (ceremonial Maori meeting house) before meeting privately with local dignitaries.

The prince crossed the Whanganui River in a waka (Maori canoe) just before midday, and said it was a privilege as he understood the importance of the river to the people of Whanganui.

The crowd greeted with a cheer as he disembarked and did an impromptu walkabout.

Prince Harry will travel on to Auckland for the final leg of his tour Friday.

Before flying out on Saturday, he will join young soccer players at an event for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which opens in New Zealand on May 30. Endi
