U.S. Congress' approval rating remains low despite Republican win: poll

Xinhua, May 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Despite a sweeping victory of Republicans in the midterm elections five months ago, the approval ratings for Congress is still at a historical low, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday.

An uptick in Congressional activities these months has led to no improvement of public approval of lawmakers' work, with the rate at a low of 15 percent, according to the poll.

A key reason why the current Congress appears to be having more legislative success than the two previous Congresses is that both the House of Representatives and Senate are now under one party's control, showed the survey.

The legislation on authorizing the use of military force in Iraq and Syria to fight the terrorist group Islamic State, proposed by the Obama administration and backed by many members of Congress, remains stalled, Gallup noted.

Most dramatically, the Senate failed to overcome a Democratic filibuster Tuesday afternoon, which will give the president an enhanced authority in negotiating trade bills, though the survey was conducted before this occurrence. Endi
