Thailand's constitution drafters to propose referendum for new charter

Xinhua, May 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thailand's Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) on Wednesday agreed to propose to the prime minister that a referendum be held in relation to the new charter, a CDC spokesman said.

The proposal will be submitted to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o- cha, also chief of the coup-making National Council for Peace and Order, within the day, spokesman Kamnoon Sidhisamarn said after a CDC meeting.

A referendum should take place within 90 days after the distribution of the draft constitution to the public, expected no earlier than August, according to another CDC spokesman Lertrat Ratanavanich.

It requires participation from the public for the new charter to be fully accepted, Lertrat said.

In a related development, the National Legislative Assembly ( NLA) is set to meet to discuss the draft constitution on Friday.

The discussion will touch upon all major chapters of the charter, as well as whether it should be put to a referendum, NLA member Somchai Sawangkarn reportedly said.

The NLA conclusions will be submitted as suggestions to the CDC for consideration, according to NLA spokesperson Jed Sirathranon. Endi
