One more protester was killed in Buterere District here on Tuesday in a protest against President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid to run for a third term in office, bringing the death toll from such protests to more than 20.

"One of the protesters was shot dead and three others were seriously injured when police agents used tear gas and live bullets against protesters who were preventing police agents from removing barricades that protesters had set up in the road leading to Bujumbura International Airport via Buterere," said a witness who requested anonymity.

A policewoman was also injured when she was beaten by angry protesters during the incident, the witness said. "The policewoman was the chief of the other police agents who used live bullets after she ordered them to."

Protests also took place in other neighborhoods in the capital city, with more women and girls joining male protesters. In Ngagara District, witnesses said that protesters burned two cars and a motorbike near the Parliament House at Kigobe residential zone.

Organized by the civil society and the opposition, protests have continued despite a 48-hour deadline set by the Burundian Security Council on Saturday to end the protests. Endi
