Feature: Nepalese express fear in social media following another powerful quake

Xinhua, May 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Right after the powerful earthquake jolted the Himalayan nation on Tuesday noon, the 18th day since a massive April 25 quake, people started sharing their fearful experiences on social media.

People, who have been facing continuous aftershocks since last two weeks, shared today's quake as powerful as the first one. Pallavi Dhakal immediately tweeted, "Another one and still shaking! People screaming all around".

Similarly, Sabita Acharya tweeted from Kathmandu, "Feels like we will seriously die this time, Is it our examination?

Shiva Dahal tweeted, "Few houses that have been cracked by previous massive quake might have been collapsed by today's quake. Need of more tents".

People also shared the pictures of the streets and open spaces filled with huge number of people, escaping the tall and cracked buildings.

Some people expressed worry about the worst-hit districts like Sindhupalchowk, where the relief distribution programs are still underway. Hundreds of social and youth organizations had been to those affected areas with tents, food and water.

Janak Bhatta tweeted from Nuwakot, "Tremor felt at Nuwakot Rasuwa border. We are heading Rasuwa with relief items".

More than 3000 people have been confirmed dead in this north east district alone, where 90 percent of houses have been collapsed.

Most of the social media users expressed concern about the cracked houses and relief teams in the high-affected 12 districts.

Laura Diamond Dixit shared in twitter, "Concerned about villages close to the epicenter of today's earthquake. Wondering about the need for new search and rescue teams".

As most of the search and rescue teams have already left for their homelands including that of China, the worry about the possible casualties and need of rescue teams is obvious at this moment.

The death toll in April 25 deadly disaster has already surpassed 8000, with the injured people numbered at more than 17, 000.

Some worried youths also suggested the people to be calm and help each other. Abhimanyu Thapa posted a status, "Stay safe. Don' t panic. Help the kids and elders". Landslides were also reported in Sindhupalchowk and Kavre district by few locals, with no much detail.

These days, social media has been a very powerful tool in sharing information and latest updates in Nepal, especially aftermath of the massive earthquake.

Even the Nepal Police shared in Twitter through its handle @ NepalPoliceHQ, "Please stay in open field, help us make free road, do not make phone busy. SMS is suggested". News about the magnitude of earthquake and epicenter was also disseminated immediately through social media of international news channels. Endi
