1 dead, 3 injured in clash between Philippine military, NPA

A civilian died, two soldiers and a policeman were injured in clash between communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels and government troops in east Philippine province of Camarines Sur early Tuesday morning, the military said.

Angelo Guzman, spokesman of the military's Southern Luzon Command, said forces from 42nd Infantry Battalion and local police were on a combat operation when they caught up with about 15 NPA rebels in Libmanan town at around 5:50 a.m.

Guzman said the civilian was hit by stray bullets and the two soldiers and one policeman were injured by explosive fragment.

He added the government troops and the rebels exchanged gun fires for at least 20 minutes, until the rebels withdrew with undermined number of casualties.

The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969. Endi
