Former party official gets life imprisonment for murder in Finland

A court in Helsinki gave life imprisonment on Monday to a ruling party official who had committed murder, Finland's national radio Yle reported.

Last October, the accused man killed a 58-year-old woman who outraged him through criticism of the way he treated his dogs.

The case got major publicity as the man was at the time a regional functionary of the ruling National Coalition Party.

No other details were known yet.

In Finland, a person imprisoned for life can apply for freedom on probation after 12 years in jail. There has been some public debate recently in Finland about the relatively short duration of the life sentence in Finland as a form of punishment. Endit
