Two U.S. police officers died Saturday evening in the city of Hattiesburg in Mississippi state due to injuries sustained in a shooting incident, local media reported.

The two policemen, whose identities were withheld until notification of their families, died after they were transported to the Forrest General Hospital for treatment of the wounds, Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict was quoted by WDAM TV as saying.

The shooting took place in the Gordon Street, where the suspect fled the scene in an officer's vehicle that was later abandoned near the rail road tracks behind the train depot, the report said.

Several local agencies were conducting a manhunt in the area, but they did not yet have a description of the suspect. The cause of the shooting was not disclosed. Endi
