Slovenia marks WWII Victory Day

Xinhua, May 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovenia celebrated Victory Day on Saturday with a number of events being held across the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Addressing a mass rally in Ljubljana, Milan Kucan, the first president when Slovenia declared independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991, said that the resistance in the WWII gave Slovenians a place among nations that created the foundation for the modern world.

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, was occupied by military forces of Italy and Nazi Germany between April 1941-May 9, 1945. It was the only city in Europe to be surrounded by barb wire during the occupation, which lasted 1,170 days.

Slovenian President Borut Pahor lay a wreath at a memorial to Red Army troops in Murska Sobota, northeast of Slovenia on the day.

Of all V-Day celebrations in Slovenia, "March Along the Barb Wire" is one of the most popular sporting event.

The 34-km Path of Remembrance and Comradeship attracted thousands of people, who walked the perimeter of Ljubljana as it was during WWII occupation.

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar and Parliament Speaker Milan Brglez took part in the march. Endit
