People in Riga celebrate Victory Day

Xinhua, May 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hundreds of people flocked to a Soviet-era memorial in Riga on Saturday morning for annual Victory Day celebrations marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

The crowd gathered by the monument in Victory Park to watch video footage on World War II and take part in the events planned throughout the day by the nongovernmental organization 9.maijs.

Organizers said they expected an estimated 100,000 people to attend the Victory Day events in Riga this year. Police were out in force to maintain order during the celebrations.

Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs of the leftist Harmony party, Russian Ambassador to Latvia Alexander Veshnyakov, as well as representatives of the Chinese, Belarussian, Kazakh, Uzbek and Azerbaijani embassies in Riga also arrived in Victory Park to lay flowers at the memorial. Endit
