1st LD: Egypt's Mubarak, 2 sons sentenced to 3 years in jail in corruption case

Xinhua, May 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons to three years in jail in a retrial of a corruption case.

Mubarak and his sons, Alaa and Gamal, were also fined a total of 125.779 million Egyptian pounds (about 16.47 million U.S. dollars) for embezzling public funds allocated for the restoration of the presidential palaces.

Saturday's verdict could be appealed.

Last May, the Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Mubarak to three years in prison, while his sons received four-year imprisonment terms over the embezzlement case.

However, in January the Mubaraks appealed against the sentences and a retrial was ordered.

Last November, an Egyptian court cleared Mubarak of charges of killing protesters during the 2011 uprising that unseated him. Endit
