Ecuador signed here with a Chinese state company on Thursday a contract for the implementation of a safe transportation project, a government initiative to install electronic devices on cars to reduce crime rate.
The second-phase contract, totaling 36.19 million U.S. dollars, was signed by Wang Fei, manager of China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC) in Ecuador, and Lorena Bravo, executive director of Ecuador's National Traffic Agency
The Comprehensive Security Project for Public and Commercial Transport, or abbreviated as SITPC in Spanish, was launched in January 2013 after the National Traffic Agency signed a contract with CEIEC in November 2012.
The first-phase contract, which totaled 71.52 million U.S. dollars, was funded by refundable credit from China and completed last March with the installation in buses and taxis of safe transport devices, consisting two video cameras, help buttons, a digital recorder, a satellite tracking device and a backup power equipment.
In addition, the help button is connected to the ECU-911 system, a flagship project of the Ecuadorian government in which a technology platform brings together all security agencies to respond to emergencies with a single telephone number, which allows a rapid response to emergencies.
According to Bravo, traffic accidents in Ecuador are one of the leading causes of death, mainly by speeding and the inexperience of drivers. The transport project is "very important and effective for Ecuador," since it is able to receive some 5,000 emergency alerts on criminal acts or accidents.
The director added that in this second phase, the Chinese company will deliver and install security devices for 17,256 buses, taxis and ambulances. The contract also includes the installation of LCD screens in buses for passengers to know the speed at which they travel and report cases of excesses so that drivers can be penalized.
"We express our commitment that in the second phase we will continue to make every effort to implement the contract, so as to ensure public transport safety and contribute to technological cooperation between our two countries," the representative of the Chinese company Wang Fei said. Endi
