World table tennis championships' economic impact over projections

The world table tennis championships that ended here on May 3 generated more economic activity in the southeastern Chinese city, according to figures released on Wednesday.

Figures from China Telecom's Suzhou branch reviewed by Xinhua News Agency's Economic Information Department show the world championships generated at least 995.7 million yuan (161 million US dollars) in direct economic impact from April 24 to May 3.

China Telecom said over 114,300 people watched the championships with the male accounting for 71.3 percent of visitors and 60 percent of the visitors over 35 years old.

The figures show table tennis-related visitors spent 40 million yuan on food and drinks, 48.66 on lodging and 1.1 million on transport. Enditem
