The Security Council of the United Nations on Wednesday strongly condemned the killings of two UN peacekeepers when a UN peacekeeping mission was ambushed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The attack against peacekeepers with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in Beni territory took place Tuesday and left two Tanzanian peacekeepers dead and 13 others injured, while four more peacekeepers were reported missing, said the Council in a statement to the press.

As of Wednesday, the four peacekeepers who were reported missing had been found, said deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq at a daily news briefing here Wednesday.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the peacekeepers killed, as well as to the government and people of Tanzania, and to the MONUSCO. They also wished a speedy recovery to those injured, according to the statement.

The council called on the government of the DRC to swiftly investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice and stressed that those responsible for the attack shall be held accountable.

While expressing a deep concern about the security crisis in eastern DRC due to ongoing destabilizing activities of foreign and domestic armed groups, the council also underlined that attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law and reiterated their full support to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC and MONUSCO to implement their mandates.
