Ukraine mulls higher tariffs for Russian gas transit: official

Xinhua, May 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukraine is considering raising fees for Russian natural gas transit via its territory by using a new system of tariff formation, an official from Ukraine's state-run energy company Naftogaz said Wednesday.

"The Regulatory Asset Base system includes the so-called ship-or-pay principle and the use of this system would lead to a substantial increase in gas transit fare," Yuriy Vitrenko, director for business development at Naftogaz, told local media.

After the introduction of the new tariff formation scheme, fees for Russian gas transit may increase by 50 percent, Vitrenko said, without disclosing a timeline of the project implementation.

Kiev has already informed Moscow about the plans to use the new tariff formation system, Vitrenko added.

The Ukrainian gas transportation system with a capacity to pump up to 142.5 billion cubic meters of gas to European countries a year, transits more than half of Russia's Europe-bound fuel.

In the first quarter of 2015, the charge for Russian gas transit via Ukrainian territory was 2.88 U.S. dollars per 100 km. Endi
