Photo exhibition marking World War II victory opens in Yangon

A photo exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of victory of World War II opened at the National Museum in Myanmar's Yangon Wednesday.

The 12-day commemorative event, jointly sponsored by Chinese Embassy and Russian Embassy, will run until May 17.

Attending the inaugural ceremony were Yangon Region Chief Minister U Myint Swe, Deputy Foreign Minister U Thant Kyaw, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Yang Houlan and Russian Ambassador to Myanmar Vasily Borisavich Pospelov.

The two ambassadors delivered speeches at the ceremony, highlighting the great significance of the historic event.

Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Yang Houlan told Xinhua in an interview that this year is the 70th Anniversary victory of Chinese people's Anti-Japanese War and the World's Anti-Fascist War.

China and Russia are the main battlefield of World War II in Asia and Europe, Yang said, adding that China made grave sacrifice and contribution for the victory of World War II.

Noting that Myanmar is an important member of the anti-fascist camp and an advocator of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, Yang said the Yunnan-Myanmar Road represented an important historical witness of anti-Japanese facts in the World War II.

Yang vowed that China would sincerely cooperate with all countries including Russia and Myanmar to build a new model of international relations of peace, development, cooperation and win- win to push building of human common destiny and bring about better wellbeing to the world and the people.

Russian Ambassador to Myanmar Vasily Borisavich Pospelov also said the holding of the exhibition is to enable students and young people to know what happened in the world 70 years ago and accept the lessons of history so as to safeguard world peace.

Myanmar Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Thant Kyaw also hoped that people, especially the young ones, would not forget the history, accept the lesson of history, prevent the history from recurrence and cherish and maintain peace. Endi
