The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) conducted a military exercise Wednesday in the Aegean Sea.

The aim of the military exercise is to improve the TSK's capability for search and rescue operations in land and sea incidents, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

In the first phase of the three-day exercise dubbed "Anatolian Star--2015 Search and Rescue Exercise," teams launched a search and rescue operation to save illegal migrants at a dry cargo vessel about to sink in the international waters of the Aegean Sea, said the report.

In the second phase, the land part of the exercise, teams will launch an operation Thursday to rescue missing climbers on Dumanli Mountain of the Menemen district in western Izmir.

The exercise is jointly conducted by the TSK, teams from the Ministry of Transportation, and Maritime Affairs and Communications' Search and Rescue Coordination Center (AAKKM) in an area between Chios and Lesbos islands, said the report.

It added that several military ships, aircraft and helicopters were used during the exercise to improve the TSK's emergency readiness. Endit
