The father of a four-year-old Bulgarian girl who went missing in April in Athens, was charged with her murder by Greek judicial authorities on Tuesday.
Greek police said that it was unlikely the remains of the child would be found. Greek society at large was shocked as hideous details of the case emerged in the media.
Ani Borisova was reported missing on April 21 by her 25-year-old mother, who on Tuesday was also charged with criminal negligence and perjury.
The mother initially claimed that she had left the child with another Bulgarian woman for a few days to travel to Germany and discovered that Ani had disappeared upon her return to Athens. The mother talked about a possible kidnap at first.
Following police investigation, Ani's 27-year-old father was arrested on Monday as a key suspect of homicide and her mother for putting the girl at risk and perjury, police announced on Tuesday.
According to Greek police Ani's father, a drug addict, confessed to the killing during questioning.
Initially, he had said that he found the child dead after waking up from a drug induced haze and amid panic disposed the body.
Attica prefecture police chief Christos Papazafiris told media the case was unprecedented in Greek history.
Police officers were shocked by the gruesome details of the desecration of the child's dead body, Papazarifis said. The father cut Ani's body in pieces, boiled it and threw it in the garbage, according to Greek national news agency AMNA and other local media.
Police investigators estimate that the tragedy occurred in early April on 8 or 9, long before the mother reported the disappearance.
The father, according to Greek police sources, admitted to the murder and gave details to one of his friends, also a Bulgarian national, who gave a statement to the police.
The father allegedly told his friend that "God took Ani with Him" and that he disposed of her body during the Greek Orthodox Easter holiday.
According to police, the father tried to clear all the traces of the crime from the apartment where they lived in central Athens, but forensic experts found evidence. Endit
