The Egyptian authorities decided Sunday to extend the presence of the Egyptian forces in the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, Egyptian state-run MENA news agency reported.
Egypt's Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab issued the decree after the country's defense minister made the request, according to MENA.
On March 26, Egypt sent naval and air forces to join a Saudi-led military operation against the Shiite Houthi fighters in Yemen who seized large parts of the country. The Egyptian forces were supposed to stay there for 40 days.
Yemeni President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi was forced to fled Yemen's southern port city of Aden in February, his last stronghold in the country, and is now taking shelter in Saudi Arabia.
The coalition forces started air raids on March 26, aiming to restore Hadi's effective rule, and urged the Houthis to retreat from cities they have seized since September last year, including the Yemeni capital city of Sanaa. Endit
