Liu finds solace in women's doubles

Xinhua, May 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Still smart from losing the women's singles title to Ding Ning a day ago, Liu Shiwen found some solace in Sunday's doubles final where she paired with Zhu Yuling to victory.

The all-Chinese final saw Liu/Zhu beat Ding/Li Xiaoxia in seven sets (8-11, 11-8, 3-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8).

In Saturday's singles final, world No. 2 Liu was obviously distracted by a medical break called for Ding, which broke Liu's winning pace that saw her win the sixth set 11-4 and lead 2-0 in the deciding set.

When Ding limped back to action after team doctor treated her right ankle for over 10 minutes, Liu lost concentration and made a string of errors, letting the world top-ranked rival grab her second world singles title since 2010.

Li Jie from the Netherlands and Li Qian of Poland, the losing semifinalists to Ding/Li, shared the third place with Singapore's Feng Tianwei/Yu Mengyu. Endi
