Trial of imprisoned former President of Maldives "unfair": UN human rights officials

A delegation from the UN Human Rights Office examined the criminal case against the former president of the Maldives, Mohammad Nasheed, who is serving a 13- year prison sentence, and found the trial "vastly unfair", deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said Friday at a daily news briefing here.

"The delegation found that however serious the allegations against him, the trial of Mr. Nasheed was vastly unfair and his conviction was arbitrary and disproportionate," said Haq.

While in the country from April 20 to 23, the delegation met with Maldives's government and judicial officials, civil society members and with Nasheed, said Haq.

Nasheed, President of the Maldives from 2008 to 2012, is the current President and one of the founders of the Maldivian Democratic Party. In March 2015, Nasheed was convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Act of Maldives for arresting Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Endite
