DPRK slams U.S. for attempt to deploy defense system in South Korea

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday slammed the United States for its attempt to deploy in South Korea the terminal high altitude area defense (THAAD) system, said the official KCNA news agency.

"The ulterior aim sought by the U.S. ... is to forward-deploy high-performance radar in South Korea in order to rapidly monitor and chase the movements of missiles of the rivals in the Eurasian region," a spokesman for the Disarmament and Peace Institute under the DPRK Foreign Ministry said in a statement released by the KCNA.

The U.S. attempt to deploy THAAD in South Korea "would spark off mistrust and friction between the surrounding countries and the U.S. and South Korea" and "would entail irretrievable baneful consequences and new danger to the security environment in the region," said the spokesman.

It concluded that the United States seeks to achieve its military purpose and strain relations between South Korea and its surrounding countries to put Seoul under tighter control.

"This will compel the DPRK to bolster up its military capability to cope with it as the DPRK will be exposed to its threat," the spokesman said. Endi
