Slovak gov't seeks majority stake in electricity company SE

Xinhua, April 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

To boost its ownership in electricity utility Slovenske Elektrarne (SE), the Slovak government held talks with current majority shareholder, Enel, to acquire a majority stake, announced Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico after a meeting with Enel general director Francesco Starace here on Wednesday.

Italian-owned Enel owns a 66-percent stake in the Slovak electricity utility company.

"I told Mr. Starace that the Slovak government would enter into talks with Enel with the aim of boosting Slovakia's position in SE. This is the official policy of my government. We'll only adopt decisions that will allow the state to bolster its position in SE in order to gain control of the company," said Fico.

Meanwhile, the Slovak government has set the priority to finish building the third and fourth reactor blocks at the Mochovce nuclear power plant, which Enel is building, but the planned sale of Enel's shares may delay the process. As a result, Slovakia will demand that Enel provides guarantees that it will complete construction, said Fico.

Enel is receiving bids for its shares until May 9. According to Fico, this only concerns indicative bids. The government won't join in this process and will instead lead separate talks with Enel. Endit
