The Brazilian government on Tuesday regretted the execution of Brazilian citizen Rodrigo Muxfeldt Gularte earlier in the day in Indonesia, describing it as a serious incident in bilateral relations.
Gularte, 42, was arrested for drug-trafficking in Indonesia. He tried to enter the country with cocaine smuggled in surfboards. He spent 11 years in jail in Indonesia before his execution.
He was the second Brazilian citizen to be executed this year in Indonesia. Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira was executed for the same crime in January. The executions have left the relations between the two countries shaky and tense.
Brazil expressed its solidarity to Gularte's family and expressed their consternation at Indonesia's decision to execute the Brazilian citizen despite several pleas from the Brazilian government for a change in the sentence.
They requested the cancellation of the execution based on information that Gularte had psychiatric problems and thus could not be subjected to capital punishment.
Gularte's body will be transported to Brazil, where it will be buried.
Ambassador Sergio Danese, secretary-general at the Foreign Ministry, told the press that the execution strengthens Brazil's stance on capital punishment and the country will work even harder for the end of the death penalty around the world.
"We will direct our efforts to convince the countries that still practice the capital punishment to gradually abolish it," he said. Endi
