Cuban Five to lead May Day parade

Xinhua, April 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

More than 1,800 representatives from 192 unions or social organizations from 68 countries are set to take part in Cuba's International Workers' Day parade on May 1.

A spokesman for Cuba's Workers' Central Union (CTC), Raymundo Navarro, said Tuesday that 618 of the visitors will represent unions, while the remainder represent social organizations and other solidarity groups.

This year's parade through the capital and major cities in the island's 14 provinces will take place under the banner "United in the construction of socialism."

Some 50,000 Cuban health care workers are expected to take part in the march in Havana, led by members of the Henry Reeve brigade, which helped fight Ebola in West Africa.

Also leading the celebration will be the members of the Cuban Five, who reunited with their families in December, after the United States and Cuba agreed to restore diplomatic ties, leading to their release from jail following some 16 years in prison.

The men have been hailed as "examples of fortitude, steadfastness and loyalty to the revolution and the country." Endi
