2 Syria mortars hit Israeli-occupied Golan

Two mortar shells fired from Syria hit the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights on Tuesday, but caused no damage or casualties, Israeli officials said.

A spokesperson with the Israeli military said in a statement the mortars fell in open fields near the Israeli settlement of Odem and Quneitra, a crossing region near the Israel-Syria border.

"Multiple explosions were heard in the northern Golan Heights. Sirens were sounded in the surrounding area," the statement read.

A military official later told Xinhua that the mortars are believed to be a spillover from the fighting in Syria, as fierce battles between Syrian government troops and rebels restarted early in the morning.

Errant fire from the fighting in Syria has been occasionally spilling over to Israel, usually causing no casualties or damage.

The latest incident came three days after Israel launched an airstrike that killed at least four people who according to Israel were approaching the border with an explosive device. Endit
