Nairobi to host Africa Volleyball championship

Xinhua, April 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

A total of six countries will be battling for the single slot reserved for the continent, when the women's Africa volleyball Championships starts in Nairobi on June 10.

Kenya are the defending champions, having beaten Algeria in the finals of the 2013 edition.

However, this year's competition is more important as it will act as a qualifier for the 2015 FIVB Women's World Cup to be hosted in Japan from Aug. 22 to Sept. 6.

Waithaka Kioni, Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Chairman, said the country is ready to host Africa's best teams in the two- week competition. Kenya has won the event seven times, with Egypt winning twice.

"We have two venues in Nairobi and we hope it will be the best competition. We hosted this event in 2013 and won it. Now we want to repeat the same," he said.

All the major forces are expected to show in the final including the two African representatives in the 2014 FIVB World Championship Cameroon and Tunisia, Giants Egypt, Algeria and the emerging Senegal. Endite
