Nigeria conducts supplementary polls in states amid tight security

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is conducting supplementary governorship and House of Assembly elections in some states across the country.

The states where the re-run elections will be conducted are Abia, Imo, Taraba, Delta and Kogi States.

In northern Taraba, registered voters turned out en-mass for accreditation in the re-run election for governorship in the state.

The re-run will take place in 218 polling units across 10 council areas of Taraba.

Security have been beefed up across the state especially Jalingo, the capital, to avert possible violence that may erupt while conducting the exercise.

The police in Taraba had on Friday announced a restriction of movement from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of measures to prevent any break down of law and order during the election.

Also, the electoral commission has called on the Nigerian police to enforce the no movement order on politicians and government officials with armed personnel during the Saturday supplementary elections.

The Chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega, made the call when the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase paid him a courtesy visit on Friday in Abuja.

Jega said a situation in which high profile politicians moved around with bodyguards, convoy and armed personnel, not necessarily security personnel probably private armed personnel had to be stopped.

He said that most of conflicts that occurred on election days were attributable to these kinds of engagements. Endi
