Fighting leaves 28 dead in Afghanistan's N. Kunduz province

Taliban attacks and counter attacks have claimed 28 lives including 25 militants across the northern Kunduz province with Kunduz city as its capital 250 km north of Kabul since Friday, police spokesman in the province Sayed Sarwar Hussaini said Saturday.

"Taliban militants conducted a series of attacks against government interests in Khanabad, Aliabad, Gortipa and Imab Sahib districts since Friday and security forces retaliated and so far 28 people including 25 rebels, two police and a civilian have been killed," Hussaini told Xinhua.

Conflict is still going on in parts of the said districts, he added.

During the conflicts a total of 32 militants, three police and two civilians have sustained injuries, the official asserted.

Taliban militants fighting the government launched their so- called annual spring offensive dubbed "Azm" which means " Resolution" on Friday morning.

Afghan Interior Minister Noorul Haq Ulumi has downplayed the Taliban announcement to launch spring offensive and said the security forces are capable enough to foil enemies' designs. Endi
