Ukraine's Dnipro advances to Europa League semifinals

Xinhua, April 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukraine's Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk advanced to UEFA Europa League's semifinals after beating Belgium's Brugge 1-0 at the second leg of the round of last eight on Thursday night.

With 1-0 win on aggregate, Dnipro secured a historic triumph, reaching the semifinals of the European tournament for the first time in its history.

The match was held at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev in front of about 16,000 spectators.

Given a goalless draw in the first leg, both teams were cautious in their defence and neither side came close to scoring from the beginning of the match.

After a slow first half, the hosts turned up the pressure and created plenty of chances through coordinated efforts from the midfielders Eugene Konoplyanka and Ruslan Rotan.

Dnipro had their best period in the final 10 minutes and the scoring opportunities converted into a goal in the 82nd minute when Rotan's pass found Eugene Shakhov who sent the ball into the top corner of Brugge's net.
