Roundup: Afghan militancy claims 34 lives in 2 days

Taliban-led militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of 34 people including seven civilians over the past two days, official sources confirmed Thursday.

In the latest violent incident which happened in the norhternwestern Badghis province, a group of Taliban militants stormed a police checkpoint early Thursday morning, killing seven policemen and injuring three others, a local official said. "A group of Taliban rebels attacked a police checkpoint in Morichaq area of Balamirghab district along the border with Turkmenistan in the wee hours of Thursday, killing seven police and wounding three others," spokesman for provincial government Mir Wais Mirzakwal told Xinhua.

Three more policemen have gone missing, he added.

He also added that units of Afghan national army have been dispatched to the area to ensure law and order there and conflict is going on between the two sides.

In another violent event, seven persons, all civilians, were killed as a roadside bomb organized by militants struck a Rickshaw in the western Nimroz province Wednesday afternoon, a statement of provincial governor sent to media outlets said.

"A bomb planted by terrorists on a road in Khashrod district, Nimroz province struck a Rickshaw Wednesday afternoon killing seven innocent civilians including a woman, four children and two men," the statement asserted.

Moreover, the Interior Ministry in a statement released here on Thursday reported killing 20 armed insurgents across the conflict- ridden Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.

"Units of police backed by the army have killed 20 armed militants during series of operations across the country over the past 24 hours," the statement of the Interior Ministry said.

During the operations which have been conducted in Zabul, Kandahar, Herat, Kunar, Jauzjan, Takhar and Kunduz, 10 more militants have been arrested, the statement contended.

Conflicts and insurgency usually get momentum in spring and summer commonly known as fighting season among Afghans. Endit
