Australians discriminated against for age in job market: report

Australian job seekers aged 50 or above say they have been discriminated against by potential employers.

More than a quarter say they have experienced prejudice because of their age in the past two years, an Australian Human Rights Commission report found on Thursday.

And it's happening just one year after the Australian government extended the retirement age from 65 to 67 before workers can apply for the pension.

Some surveyed said they were the target of jokes or derogatory comments from colleagues and missed out on training or promotion opportunities.

Others were threatened with dismissal because they were older.

As a result, many said they suffered stress, mental health and self-esteem issues.

The Human Rights Commission said a third of those discriminated against simply gave up job hunting.

And the report also found one third of managers took age into consideration when interviewing job applicants. Endi
