Cruzeiro, Universitario seal Libertadores knockout berth

Xinhua, April 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazil's Cruzeiro secured a berth in the Copa Libertadores knockout phase with a 2-0 victory over Bolivian outfit Universitario de Sucre on Tuesday.

Willian and Leo scored either side of halftime at the Mineirao stadium as the hosts guaranteed top spot in Group 3 with 11 points from six matches.

Universitario also advanced to the round of 16 by finishing second, two points behind Cruzeiro.

The result eased the pressure on Cruzeiro coach Marcelo Oliveira, who reportedly faced the sack if his team failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Cruzeiro have won the past two Brazilian Serie A titles but have failed to take their domestic form into South America's top club competition.

In the group's other fixture on Tuesday, Venezuela's Mineros de Guayana posted their first win of the campaign by routing Argentina's Huracan 3-0 in Puerto Ordaz.

Zamir Valoyes scored twice in the first half and Rafael Acosta added another just after the hour. Both teams have been eliminated from the competition. Endi
