India's Rahul Gandhi makes first public appearance after 57-day leave

Xinhua, April 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi Saturday made his first public appearance on Saturday two days after returning from a 57-day leave abroad.

The 44-year-old vice president of the country's main opposition Congress party met representatives of multiple farmer groups at his office, ahead of Sunday's mega rally against the Indian government's anti-farmer laws.

The Congress party opposed the amended land acquisition act, which has been promulgated by the government through an executive order and due to come up in the parliament for its approval.

Gandhi, who is widely tipped to take over the reins of the Congress party from his mother and party chief Sonia Gandhi, returned to India Thursday after a 57-day sabbatical that included a course in meditation. Endi
