(Special for CAFS) Zambia mulls setting up military equipment plant

Xinhua, April 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Zambian government has opened discussions with a company that manufactures military equipment so that it could set up a plant in Zambia, the Zambia Daily Mail reported on Friday.

Deputy Minister of Defense Christopher Mulenga said government has opened discussions with Shacman Company, a renowned manufacturer of military equipment, on the possibility of setting up a plant in Zambia.

The Zambian minister said after holding a meeting with Shacman executive officer Reis Vieira on the sidelines of the 10th Latin America Aerospace and Defense (LAAD) exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that the company had shown willingness to set up an assembling plant in Zambia.

The plant, he said, would be assembling troop carriers, and other vehicles for transportation of defense and security personnel, adding that move was welcomed since Zambia currently faces a challenge of troop carrier vehicles.

"They have requested to come to Zambia in June to explore further. They are looking forward to coming to Zambia to come and make formalities," the Zambian minister was quoted as saying by the paper, according to a statement released by press secretary at the Zambian Embassy in Brazil. Endi
