1st LD Writethru: 6.1 magnitude quake hits Aegean Sea off Crete island, no injuries reported

A strong earthquake of 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the Aegean Sea off Crete island on Thursday evening, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

Preliminary data had estimated that the tremor was of 6.2 magnitude.

There have been no reports of injury, according to initial information from local authorities.

The epicenter of the tremor which was recorded at 21:07 local time (1807 GMT) was located at about 300 kilometers south of Athens in the sea area off the coasts of Crete at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, Greek scientists said.

The earthquake which was followed by a 3.9 magnitude aftershock a few minutes later was felt across a large part of the Aegean Sea, local media reported. Endit
