The Malta Tourism Authority has marked the 73rd anniversary of the award of the George Cross to the nation of Malta.

British King George VI bestowed the honor of the George Cross on April 15, 1942 to the Maltese people as a sign of appreciation by the British Monarchy for their bravery and perseverance that was shown during the darkest moments of the Second World War.

In his proclamation to the Maltese nation, King George VI sent the following message: "To honor the brave people, I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta, to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history."

The memorial program on Tuesday evening featured a marching display in the square by the Armed Forces of Malta Band, escorting the George Cross medal inside the President's Palace, followed by a display by the Malta Police Band and the Malta Police Silent Drill Squad.

"In order to feel part of a community, people have to know about their roots and their past. Moreover, people need to look up to heroes and to heroic acts so that they can encourage themselves and move forward. That is the meaning behind such commemorative events," said Martin Morana, events and customer care manager at the Malta Tourism Authority.

The award of the George Cross forms part of the Maltese flag. Endit
