Brazil continues to buy Swedish fighter jets despite budget cuts

Xinhua, April 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazilian Defense Minister Jacques Wagner said on Tuesday that government budget cuts will not stop the purchase of 36 Swedish fighter jets for the country's Air Force.

"The disbursements for this year amount to some 18 million reals (5.88 million U.S. dollars) and we are working to sign the medium and long-term financing contract to sustain this development," the minister said.

Brazil announced its decision to buy the Gripen NG fighter jets from Swedish manufacturer Saab by the end of 2013. The fighter jets are set to replace the air force's current fleet of aging warplanes.

As a result of the transfer of technology agreed in contract, 15 of the 36 jets will be manufactured in Brazil and 280 Brazilian engineers will travel to Sweden for training at Saab. The first batch of the 36 jets are expected to be delivered by 2019. Endi
