Unipolarity undermines global stability: Russian official

Xinhua, April 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russia's Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev on Tuesday warned against unipolarity, saying it undermines global stability.

"Attempts to preserve dominance and ensuring one's interests at the expense of others' lead to the expansion of instability, growing conflict potential and lack of mutual trust," Tass news agency quoted Patrushev as saying.

While praising members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for their consistent promotion of multipolarity and international laws, Patrushev blamed the U.S. and its allies for taking advantage of the Ukraine crisis to undermine Russia and the SCO.

At the 10th meeting of the SCO security council secretaries, Patrushev said the U.S. is the one to blame for the current complex situations in Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and Syria, which became serious threats to regional and global security.

Patrushev also reiterated that S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, which are planned to be delivered to Iran after Russia lifted the sales ban on Monday, "will not be used to harm any country but serve the purpose of maintaining security."

The decision was made according to the changes of international situations, Patrushev said.

The weapon purchase deal was signed by Moscow and Tehran in 2007, but was suspended in 2010 by then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to comply with a UN Security Council resolution that banned the supply of conventional weapons to Iran. Endite
