Icelanders' attitude towards EU membership splits: survey

Over 40 percent Icelanders still considered that their country should be a candidate for European Union (EU) membership, according to a survey published Monday.

The survey, conducted by the domestic research agency MMR from March 31 to April 7, showed 41.6 percent of respondents said yes when asked "Do you want Iceland to be a candidate country of the EU", while 42.5 percent opposed it.

The rest of 15.9 percent respondents did not take a stand on that question.

A total of 1,060 Icelanders answered the question and the survey had an error margin of plus or minus 3 percent.

Iceland applied to join the EU in 2009 but suspended its bid in 2013. Last month, the Icelandic government announced it is no longer seeking to join the 28-nation bloc. Endit
