Nigeria's APC wins governorship elections

Xinhua, April 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

The party of Nigeria's president- elect has won the elections conducted Saturday for governors in 29 out of 36 states of the country, official figures have shown.

Figures declared by Nigeria's electoral body showed that as of Monday afternoon, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 19 of the 29 states while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which previously dominated the majority of the states, battled hard to either gain or retain power in seven states.

"This is good for Nigeria's democracy, in the sense that elected officials will sit up and work hard to satisfy the electorates. Political parties will no longer go to sleep after gaining power, but rather hit the ground running from the day they get people's votes," said Olufisayo Kolawole, an APC member in the southwestern state of Osun.

APC's Muhammadu Buhari won the presidential election on March 28.

Collation of results of the governorship elections continued in some of the states on Monday.

The elections were not held in Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Kogi, Anambra and Osun states where the tenures of their governors are yet to expire.

The governorship and state congress elections took place amid tight security, but recorded a low turnout of voters compared to the number of electorates who participated in the presidential poll. Endi
