It will cost Vietnam more than 20 billion VND (over 930,000 U.S. dollars) for its delegation of 640 members, including 420 athletes, to take part in the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this June in Singapore, according to the Vietnam General Sports Department.
With 420 athletes to compete in 27 out of 36 sports at the 28th SEA Games, Vietnam set a target to stand in top three on the medal tally of the sporting festival, which is organized every two years, said the department on its website on Monday.
Thailand, Indonesia and the host Singapore are forecast to be strong rivals against Vietnam for the target.
To prepare for the event, Vietnam sent 18 teams on overseas training trips, including to the U.S. and Japan (swimmers and runners), the South Korea (shooters), Singapore (rowers), Canada (gymnasts), and China (wushu and table tennis players).
At the 27th SEA Games in 2013 in Myanmar, Vietnam ranked third with 73 golds, 86 silvers, and 86 bronzes, after Thailand with 107 golds and the host Myanmar with 86 golds.
Vietnam was recommended to host the 2021 SEA Games at the request of the Southeast Asian Games Federation, said the sports department. Endit
