Iran has plans to build small nuclear power plants and desalination facilities in the coming years, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said Saturday.
Building small power plants will be implemented within the next decade, which will be used for a variety of purposes, Kamalvandi was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency.
The Iranian official pointed to the agreement signed between Iran's AEOI and the Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation in last November, saying that "a Rosatom delegation is expected to travel to Tehran late in April for talks on the construction of two power plants and production of fuel," according to Press TV.
On November 11, Iran and Russia signed an agreement for the construction of two nuclear reactors in the Islamic republic by the Russians in Iran's southern Bushehr province to expand Iran's existing 1,000 megawatt Bushehr reactor, which was completed by the Russian company and started operation in 2013.
Iran's plan to construct small nuclear power plants will further enhance the country's capacity to produce nuclear energy which was already limitted to Bushehr plant's output. Endit
