Nigerian political leaders told to show restraint ahead of polls

Xinhua, April 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called on all political leaders in Nigeria to refrain from "any inflammatory statements" that may incite violence ahead of the country's governorship polls.

In a statement released by Ban's spokesperson, Ban said he hopes the same conditions, which facilitated the peaceful holding of the country's presidential and parliamentary elections on March 28-29, will prevail in elections for gubernatorial and state congresses Saturday.

Ban also called on all political leaders throughout Nigeria to "refrain from and immediately condemn any inflammatory statements that amount to an incitement to violence," said the statement.

To ensure safety and security of the Saturday's elections, the Nigeria police headquarters ordered a restriction of vehicular movement in all the states where elections will be held. Water- tight security measures have also been introduced in 31 out of 36 states of the country. Endite
