Some 620 irregular immigrants in distress at sea

Xinhua, April 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

A group of some 620 irregular immigrants have just launched an SOS after the engine on their vessel started misfiring at sea to the south of Malta, according to Times of Malta's report on Friday.

The irregular immigrants were believed to have left from Sabratha, 66 kilometres west of Tripoli, the capital city if Libya, earlier this morning.

The newspaper quoted an Eritrean migrant on board as saying "many people are vomiting, we have no water, we have no food...and the engine, sometimes it is stopping".

The migrant claimed that the boat was carrying mainly Eritreans and Somalis, including two children and at least one pregnant woman on board.

Italian rescue authorities picked up the SOS call from the boat and are coordinating the rescue. Endit
